Breast Cancer Awareness Month
In honor of #BreastCancerAwareness month, Plates2Shelves sheds light on one of the many factors that may contribute to those who have and are currently suffering from this invader of the body.
Breast Cancer affects close to 3 million women in the U.S. today. The statistics may seem petrifying BUT we want to introduce one prevention method that may reduce this risk.
Antiperspirants and deodorants are key to blocking unattractive odors accumulated from our daily movements BUT these personal care products may not be all that they are blocking. Containing chemical substances, aluminum and parabens, antiperspirants and deodorants act effectively by blocking sweat glands or ducts to absorb odors.
Parabens in itself are a category of chemicals that when interacted with human cells may become preserved within the breast tissue and may play a role in the development of cancer. According to Dr. Philip Harvey, editor-in-chief of the Journal of Applied Toxicology, "applying these chemicals under arms and around the sides of your breasts or chest could provide a route of almost direct exposure to underlying tissue containing estrogen receptors." Excess estrogen contributes to growth of cancer cells, according to the National Cancer Institute.
Although some researchers suggest the link between antiperspirants and deodorants to breast cancer as a myth, we would rather our consumers to be safe than sorry. We want to share with you personal care products to stock on the shelves of your household.
